Choosing A General Contractor For Your Home Remodel Project

home-remodel-12-300x200.jpgAmong the biggest obstacles when thinking of building a new home or doing a large home remodel project where the expertise of general contractor is needed, is choosing an expert. There are two ways to help you deal with this process. Selecting a general contractor is among the most important decision that you need to make. In most cases, it helps determine the failure or success as well as the improper and proper completion of your new house or home remodel project.

Ways To Hire A Contractor For Your Home Remodel

One of the most effective methods of choosing one is pre bidding or the competitive bidding. It involves choosing at least three bids for your home remodel Myrtle Beach project. Several homeowners who try to be honest with a potential general contractor will tell them upfront that they plan to get at least three estimates. Some people have a good idea of how much work will goes into building a new home or how much it costs to remodel a home. In most cases, at least thirty hours, fuel for their trips to the site, the time they spent on the site in question, and so on. Through competitive bidding, contractors will know that you are shopping price. Given the fixed set of plans you have, you will be asking them how much they want to get the work done. General contractors make a living by offering you with your new home or transforming your current home into a place that you have always dreamed of. For many of them, they bring high quality work. However, they also need to make money so they will offer a price they believe is suitable for the work they can offer. There are several ways to get to the cheapest bid. One is the make use of extremely cheap subs, selecting base on the lowest price, assuming that all subs have included each detail of the job in their price. In most cases, this involves utilizing people that offer substandard work. They barely have sufficient funds for the material and the labor not to mention not enough funds to provide a warranty for their work. Another one is if the general contractor will lower his charge for contractors fee and overhead, which will restrict his ability to prioritize the completion of your project, which will cause you think that he is not doing his job correctly.  You need to work with a general contractor who is using reliable and proven team of sub contractors and someone who will be charging you enough to remain in business so you could call him a few months from now and his company is still operation. The other method of choosing a general contractor is the post bid. It involves selecting the contractor and then having his bid for your home improvement project. Ask your friends, neighbors, business associates if they can recommend someone they’ve worked with in the past. Ask them questions like how the contractor reacted when they asked for some changes in the middle of the project and if they followed their schedule. If you don’t have friends who can provide you with some good recommendations then you have to do your research.

All About Drywall Repairs

home-remodel-11-300x199.jpgIt is a common scenario when a homeowner like you is downstairs doing what needs to be done and the suddenly a loud noise comes from upstairs. There you’ll find a gaping hole in your wall, which your kids have accidentally created while playing. Or perhaps if someone jammed his fist into it out of anger. After making sure that everyone is alright and you’ve had a long and serious talk at the person responsible, you now have to deal with the hole. How can you fix it? Do you need calla home remodel expert?

Home Remodel: Drywall Repairs

The answer would depend on the size of the hole that is in the drywall. It will also affect how long it will take to be fixed. In case your wall has a hole that is as big as a door handle, then fixing it won’t be much of a hassle. However, if the hole is larger, then you may have to take down the old drywall and replace it with a new one. Fixing Small Holes Let’s first talk about how to fix small holes on the drywall. The first thing you need to do is cut out the fragments that are dangling on the wall. Do this using a drywall saw and a utility knife. Once you have a nice and clean area to work with, you need to take out around ½ inch to 1 inch strip of paper off the drywall. When you do that, it will look like a torn cardboard. Cut a piece of the drywall that’s a bit bigger than the hole that’s going to be repaired. Begin carving away at the back side of the drywall piece until it fits the opening well and the paper is left. This piece is referred to as the patch hat. Now add the drywall mud on the edges of the patch hat and put it in the hole. Once it’s been set in its proper place, add a coat of mud over the patch and leave it to dry. Once it had dried completely, take out any chunks and sand it until it becomes smooth. Add mud again and let it dry. Repeat the process until the patch is smooth and nice and ready to be repainted. As you can see, you don’t have to do a whole home remodel Myrtle Beach project to fix the small hole on your drywall. Repairing Larger Holes What about a larger hole? You will be doing the same thing. One thing that you’ll do differently is to cut out the entire whole. Use your drywall saw and cut up until you hit a stud. Now start measuring to the mark and then minus ¾ of an inch so you will be half on the stud. Create two marks and then snap a line or using a flat edge, create a line through the two marks, which will be the line that you need to cut. Grab the saw and cut to the stud on the other side of the hole. Measure from the exact same area that you did for the other mark and then add ¾ of an inch to it and it will give you half on the other stud. Create two marks and then draw a line. Use the line to create a square line at the bottom and top of the hole. You need to have a square hole. Now, you have to cut out the portion that you have marked. Be sure to measure the hole that you have and then cut a piece that will fit into it. After cutting, place the piece in the hole and then use drywall nails to nail two edges where the studs are. Add mud and then you are all set. If you are not sure what to do, you can always call a general contractor to help you out.

Choosing A Reliable Contractor For Your Home Remodel

home-remodel-6-300x225.jpgYou have lived in your house for several years now and it is starting to show its age. Maybe your home no longer satisfies your needs. However, you don’t want to move out of your home, leave your neighbourhood, or to live away from your family or friends. So, instead of moving away, you decide to have a home remodel. Finding a trustworthy and reliable contractor is the first thing that you have to do. The next one is to pay close attention to what the contractor is doing. Remember that this is your house and your money. You don’t want to be wasting any of them so be sure to stay on top of your project.

Finding A Pro For Your Home Remodel

Before you start reaching out to contractors, you need to know what kind of work you want to be conducted. This might sound obvious, however, several homeowners try to hire one contractor to do a wide range of renovations, which is generally not a good idea at all. Then you should try to ask homeowners in your neighbourhood for references. You might naturally turn to family members and friends but why don’t you ask your neighbors as well? If you know someone in your neighbourhood had a recent home improvement and you liked the end result then go and ask them who did the work and if they are satisfied with the final product. Most homeowners will instantly share their opinion of home remodel contractors especially if they liked how things have turned out. The next thing you have to do is to check online reviews. The internet has changed the way consumers buy products and services. You will find sites that offer consumers with third party and independent reviews from real homeowners who have hired a contractor’s services. Search online so you will get an idea of what others have to say about a Myrtle Beach home remodel contractor. You will find various opinions from homeowners who are willing to talk about the labor quality, materials as well as overall workmanship. It is also not a good idea to set a maximum or minimum number of estimates. If you are searching for a contractor for any kind of home renovation project, among the first things you will hear is obtain three estimates. The problem that comes with limiting yourself with a specific number is that you cannot be sure if you are really getting a good representation of the various options that are available. The best choice is always to get as many estimates as you can until you feel like you are making an informed and comfortable decision about the contractor who will work on your home remodel. If that is the first contractor you meet then great! But if not, then continue looking for one until you find a qualified professional like Keystone General Contracting whom you feel is a perfect match for your project.

Call Keystone General Contracting if you are looking for a reputable, top quality, and experienced contractor who can work on your home remodeling project.

Now that the snow and ice is melting away, you can do some home improvement projects that can not only give you a better home, but it could also boost its value. Here are the top 5 projects that you could do this spring:

Making roof repair a priority

While there are some easier areas to tackle, your roof is one part that you should never overlook and should always come first. It’s your home’s primary defense against the elements so it is only fitting that you give ample attention to it and do any necessary repairs. Heavy snowfall could put a great deal of stress on your roof. Sometimes, the weight becomes too great that the structural integrity of your roof becomes compromised. It is always important to check for signs of wear and damage when the snow melts. Do remember, small repairs could be done by your average DIYer, but bigger roof damage requires expert attention. Taking good care of the windows Along with some doors that lead outside your home, windows too can take a beating from the harsh winter weather. Broken window panes can be easily handled by your everyday homeowner. This part isn’t too complicated to handle but must be done with caution to avoid any unnecessary accidents. Pay close attention to your windows. Walk around your house and check all the windows to see if there are damages. Checking the sidings When temperatures drop below freezing, some areas of your home could get damaged and this includes your sidings. Check for any loose or warped pieces of sidings. If you’re using wooden sidings, you might want to consider the synthetic route. There are vinyl sidings available that not only boost your homes, value, they also make maintenance and cleanup a lot easier and they last longer too. It’s also one home improvement project that’s easy and gives your home a lot of value. Repairing gutters of installing new ones The gutters also takes a beating when heavy snowfall hits your area. The sheer weight of the snow could cause some serious damage to your gutters. Not only will damaged gutters impede water flow, it will also make way for other damages if left unrepaired. When cleaning your roof, check the gutters and see if there are any loose areas. Also check the downspouts for blockages. Upgrade your insulation If you’ve felt that your heating system was on full blast and yet you felt cold during the winter, maybe it’s time to an insulation upgrade. Beefing up your insulation is a good way to reduce your electricity bill as well as improve your home’s overall value.
